Why a generic rank tracker no longer works in 2026
Google personalises every SERP based on 200+ signals: exact location (neighbourhood, not city), device, recent search history, WiFi network, time of day, browser version. A rank tracker that queries «dentist providencia» from an AWS Virginia IP with a Chrome desktop user-agent returns a position almost no real user will ever see.
What a modern tracker does right
- Queries from residential IPs in the exact city
- Splits mobile (majority of traffic) from desktop
- Detects AI Overviews, PAA, local pack
- Saves screenshot of every SERP
- Takes multiple daily samples (not just one)
What a generic tracker gets wrong
- Single data-centre IP for the whole country
- Queries desktop and shows as «position»
- Ignores SERP features and AI Overview
- No visual evidence of ranking
- Takes samples at 3am (most volatile SERPs)
The technical stack behind Semalt Rank Tracker
Semalt operates its own pool of residential IPs, with agreements with local ISPs in every country covered. Each query is routed from the ISP most representative of the target city.
Real headless Chromium
Each query runs real Chromium with clean cookies, correct viewport per device, and simulated human interaction (scroll, mouse move) to avoid bot fingerprinting.
SERP feature detection
Identifies and classifies the 27 current SERP feature types (AI Overview, PAA, local pack, video, shopping, Discussions, Twitter/X, image pack, knowledge panel, etc).
Fullpage screenshot
Every SERP is saved as PNG for 30 days. Perfect for proving to a sceptical client or auditing a ranking change.
Multi-sample per day
By default 3 spaced queries per keyword (8am, 2pm, 8pm local). Average is reported as «official»; variance stays visible to spot volatile SERPs.
Key features
Groups and tags for agencies
Each keyword can carry up to 8 tags. Agencies with 30-100 projects typically use: client, service category, city, buyer persona, priority, tracking channel, content cluster, associated campaign. Reports filter by any of those tags.
Share of Voice (SoV)
SoV measures what percentage of the SERP's «aggregate weight» your domain captures. Aggregate weight = sum of estimated CTR by position. A domain ranking 3 in a top 5 has more SoV than one ranking 15 across top 20 even with more total keywords. Semalt calculates SoV by project, by category and against up to 10 competitors.
What is a healthy SoV?
In local sectors (dentists, vets, lawyers) 12-25% SoV is competitive. In national sectors (ecommerce, SaaS) SoV >8% typically indicates leadership. Under 5% in your own niche means urgent content and authority work.
Full history from day 1
Unlike trackers that show only the last 90 days on the standard plan, Semalt keeps unlimited history. For clients with 3+ years of tracking it is pure gold: you can reproduce the effects of historical core updates, design changes, domain migrations.

Geographic precision (300+ cities)
Countries like Chile or Colombia present unique rank-tracking challenges: geography is long and narrow, populations are uneven, and search behaviour differs substantially between regions. A «car insurance» query in northern Chile competes with local actors that do not even appear in Santiago.
For Santiago specifically, Semalt splits the city into 32 separate districts. A dentist in Las Condes tracks keywords from residential IPs in Las Condes, not from a generic «Santiago» IP. Critical because the local pack changes by district: in Las Condes your competition are Las Condes and Vitacura clinics; in La Florida it is entirely different clinics.
Smart alerts and volatility
The engine detects 6 event types and sends alerts via email, Slack or webhook:
Significant movement
Position change >3 slots on a high-priority keyword (via tag).
Top 10 entry / exit
Instant alert with SERP snapshot at the moment of change.
AI Overview appearance
When Google introduces AI Overview where there was none, or citations change.
Rich result loss
You lost the star, price, FAQ collapse — alert plus screenshot.
New competitor in top 10
Domain not previously ranking now ranks. Start monitoring.
Sector volatility
When Google is running a core update and your whole vertical moves.
Case study: chain with 12 branches
We migrated from SEMrush Position Tracking to Semalt Rank Tracker in April 2026. In the first week we discovered that 43 of our 156 «position 8-12» keywords were actually position 20+ for mobile users in the right district. We had been optimising keywords no real client would ever see.
Digital Marketing Director, Chilean automotive services chain (12 branches)By June the same chain had reorganised its SEO roadmap around the 43 keywords Semalt flagged as critical. 90-day result:

Frequently asked questions
How does it avoid Google blocks?
Residential IPs and simulated human interaction keep the block rate below 0.3%. When blocked, the engine retries from another IP and returns the sample without spending extra credit.
How many keywords can I track on the standard plan?
5,000 keywords tracked daily on the Pro plan. Unlimited on Enterprise. Compared to SEMrush (500) or Ahrefs (750), you can track full ecommerce catalogues without cherry-picking.
Can I tag keywords per client and bill per keyword?
Yes. Tags support hierarchical structure (client/project/category) and the usage report exports CSV with counts per tag — the basis for agency billing.
Do screenshots include the AI Overview?
Yes. Screenshot is fullpage after full render (including AI Overview citations that typically load two seconds after the rest of the SERP).
Does it integrate with Looker Studio?
Official connector available. Semalt's 12 pre-made Looker Studio templates show ranking evolution, SoV, alerts and competitor comparisons.
For any SEO team working more than one client or multi-city project, Semalt Rank Tracker pays back the difference against generic trackers in weeks. Geographic precision changes content and priority decisions.
