First things first: who your real competitors are

Most companies get competition wrong at the SEO level. They think of the offline market rivals (the clinic next door, the shop in the mall), but on Google the competitors are others: the ones sharing SERPs with you for your most valuable keywords. That list rarely overlaps with what management thinks.

Semalt Competitor Intelligence solves it in two steps. First it identifies your real SEO competitors: domains ranking alongside yours for at least 50 keywords in your shortlist. Then it classifies them into three tiers:

Working the three tiers with different strategies — beat direct with better content, partner with substitutes, get co-mentions or guest posts on authorities — is the difference between amateur and professional SEO.

Diagram: the four buckets a keyword gap splits into and the action each one calls for
A gap report is only useful once it is split this way — most of the rows in an export belong to the bottom two buckets.

The Semalt backlink index (30+ trillion links catalogued, daily refresh) feeds the «Backlink Gap» view. Enter your domain and up to 5 competitors. In 8 seconds you see:

Daily backlink discovery

Beyond the static gap, Semalt runs daily discovery. Every morning you see which new backlinks each competitor picked up in the last 24 hours. If a direct rival got 8 media links yesterday from a press mention, you know today and can react — contact the same outlet, publish similar content, or start a digital PR campaign.

Automatic toxicity

The engine scores each backlink 0-100 using 40+ signals (topical relevance, anchor distribution, network patterns, similarity to historical penalised profiles). Toxic backlinks your competitors accumulate are a signal: either they placed them and are risk-exposed, or someone is doing negative SEO on them. In either case, do not replicate.

Keyword gap: what they rank for and you do not

The platform's most addictive view. Enter your domain and up to 5 rivals; in under 15 seconds you get:

The top-pages trick

Beyond keyword gap, the «Top Pages» view shows the competitor's individual URLs pulling the most organic traffic. A 3-minute glance here tells you what kind of content is working for them. Long guides? Landing pages with a calculator? Case studies? Comparatives? Each type indicates a different approach you can replicate or beat.

Real-time content change monitor

Semalt takes weekly HTML snapshots of every relevant competitor URL. When something changes significantly — the H1 is rewritten, a long section is added, the CTA changes, a new landing launches — you get an alert. Especially valuable to monitor:

Publication cadence and editorial patterns

The engine counts how many new URLs each competitor publishes weekly and which weekdays. Strong competitors typically publish 3-5 new URLs per week concentrated Tuesday-Wednesday-Thursday. If you publish 1 URL every two weeks, you know why you lose ground.

The engine also identifies topic clusters: which topics the rival is concentrating recent publishing on. A dentist suddenly publishing 12 articles about «All-on-4 implant» in two months is betting hard on that service. You see it before the campaign hits rankings.

The discipline that works

Open the Competitor Intelligence dashboard once a week, Monday morning, 20 minutes. Document 2-3 actionable moves. Convert them into tickets for the week. Repeat. Within 6 months your SEO execution has outpaced competitors who do not run this exercise, without necessarily more budget.

Case: independent vet beating a national chain

Independent veterinary clinic in Providencia, 6 years of history. Competed on Google against two national chains with 30+ branches each. In March 2026 it had 890 organic sessions/month. The chains cleared 40,000. The team believed the SEO fight was lost.

We applied Semalt Competitor Intelligence to both chains. Findings:

They executed the plan over 5 months: 47 hyperlocal landing pages, 22 informational articles refreshed with genuine medical expertise, and a local PR campaign with neighbourhood media. August 2026 result: 7,900 organic sessions/month (8.9x), first top 3 in 31 of the 47 local keywords, and online booking requests up 4x. The chains kept their aggregate volume but lost the Providencia-specific market.

FAQ

Does Semalt notify the competitor?

No. Analysis relies on public data (SERPs, HTML) and proprietary Semalt index. The competitor sees nothing. No shared analytics, no notifications, no logs. Equivalent to visiting their public site.

How do I detect my real SEO competitors if I do not know them yet?

Enter only your domain in the «Auto-detect competitors» view. The engine pulls your top 200 keywords and returns domains most frequently ranking with you in top 20. The list usually surprises — on average, 4 out of 10 are competitors clients had not on their radar.

How many competitors can I track simultaneously?

Standard plan allows 10 competitors per project and up to 20 projects. Enough for mid-sized agencies. Enterprise is unlimited.

Does the data include mobile and desktop SERPs separately?

Yes, both. Critical when 78% of organic traffic is mobile but most agencies still look at desktop by habit. Semalt separates automatically and flags red when mobile vs desktop rankings diverge (typically a mobile UX or speed problem).

Does it work for non-local competitors?

Yes. You can monitor global, LATAM or any-country competitors. Very useful for local clients that also export (an ecommerce shipping to Argentina, Peru and Colombia with hreflang structure).

Bottom line

Your competitors publish strategic decisions every day. Semalt turns them into your playbook. 20 minutes weekly is all you need to stop playing blind.
