The link-building reality in 2026
Three things changed over the last 24 months:
- Google's 2024 link spam update eliminated impact from 60% of low-quality backlinks.
- Media editors receive 40-80 SEO pitches per week — generic templates go straight to spam.
- AI-detection tools in outreach are in 70% of professional inboxes — a pitch obviously written by ChatGPT gets flagged before it is read.
Antipatterns Google penalises in 2026
PBN networks (Private Blog Networks): detected by SpamBrain with >94% precision. Bulk guest-post purchase in the same window: pattern detected in Search Console. Excessive exact-match anchor: threshold as low as 25% of the profile. Links from zero-traffic sites: strong artificial-network signal.
The 4 Semalt Link Building modules
Prospection
Finds candidate sites via 12 strategies (broken links, competitor gap, resource pages, unlinked brand mentions, guest post opportunities, HARO-style, digital PR).
Outreach
Integrated email inbox with AI that drafts the first personalised pitch, scheduled follow-ups, and automatic reply detection.
Recovery
Tracks lost backlinks (dead link, 404 page, editor changed the link) and automates re-request to the editor.
Cleanup
Classifies inbound backlinks as safe, doubtful or toxic and generates the disavow.txt file for Google Search Console.
AI prospection: 5 strategies
1. Enriched backlink gap
Enter your domain and 3-5 competitors. In 12 seconds Semalt returns sites linking to at least 2 competitors but not you. Highly probable candidates because they have demonstrated topical interest. Filter by DA, page type (blog, resource, comparison) and link freshness.
2. Broken link hunting
Semalt crawls the top 500 sites in your vertical and detects broken links to resources you could replace. You receive: site URL + specific page with the broken link + failed destination URL + your equivalent page. The most effective pitch in the sector: you are doing the editor a favour.
3. Unlinked brand mentions
The engine finds all mentions of your brand in media and blogs without backlink. Semalt proposes: for each mention, editor email + short pitch requesting a link. Historic conversion: 34% (highest in the sector).
4. Resource pages
«Best SEO tools», «SMB resources», «complete guide to X» type pages. Semalt identifies them via URL and H1 patterns and suggests candidates where your resource fits topically.
5. Digital PR (news trigger)
The engine alerts you when your main keyword or brand appears in trending topics in target media. The 24-48h window where a reactive pitch has 3-5x higher response rates than average.
Automated outreach with a human touch
The Semalt outreach flow is hybrid: AI prepares everything, a human reviews and sends.
Contact enrichment
Semalt finds the editor's email via Hunter, Snov and its own verification. Complements with name, role, recent articles, detected editorial tone.
Personalised pitch draft
AI generates a short pitch (150-220 words) citing: (a) a recent editor article, (b) the destination page, (c) the specific proposal (broken link, resource, guest post). Tone adapted to the site's language and register.
Human approval
The pitch appears in your queue with options: send as-is, edit and send, skip contact, mark «not relevant» (feedback to improve the model).
Automatic follow-up
If no reply, Semalt sends follow-up 1 (short, +1 value add) on day 5. Follow-up 2 on day 12. Max 2 follow-ups; never more (to protect sending domain reputation).
Automatic link detection
When the editor publishes the link, the Semalt crawler detects it in 4h and updates the CRM: contact marked «won», link added to profile, conversion metric recorded.
Sending domain warmup
Semalt recommends a dedicated subdomain for outreach (e.g. outreach.yourbrand.com). The engine warms the domain automatically for the first 30 days (5-10 emails/day, gradually rising) so Gmail and Outlook trust it and do not mark as spam.
Backlink recovery: links you already had
You lost a backlink in the last 90 days. How do you know? The Semalt monitor detects 6 loss types:
| Loss type | Common cause | Recommended action |
|---|---|---|
| Link removed | Editor edited the article | Contact editor with context |
| Page deleted (404) | Content cleanup | Request 301 redirect to new URL |
| Domain expired | Site did not renew | Consider buying the domain |
| Dofollow → nofollow change | Editorial policy shift | Request reversal |
| Link to competitor | Editor changed recommendation | Counter-pitch with new proposal |
| Penalised site | Site lost DA / deindexed | Remove from active profile |
Each type has a preconfigured recovery playbook. Average recovery rate flows between 38% (link removed) and 71% (freshly published unlinked mention).
Smart disavow and toxic cleanup
Toxicity signals Semalt monitors
Over-optimised anchor text, site with <100 org visits/month, network patterns (same hosting, same Analytics), IP in blacklists, exotic TLD without relevance, similarity to historically penalised profiles.
When to disavow and when NOT
Google recommends using disavow only after manual action or with clear evidence that backlinks are hurting ranking. Semalt shows classification but requires manual confirmation before generating disavow.txt — not automatic by design.
When should you actually generate disavow?
If Search Console shows manual action, if you detect a spike of spammy anchor text (viagra, casino), or if 15%+ of your profile classifies as toxic. Outside these cases, ignoring disavow is the right answer.
Case study: real estate agency with 43 links in 4 months
We had never done structured link building. Twelve backlinks total, all from directories. With Semalt we launched a 4-month campaign in August 2025 and closed 43 new backlinks — 6 in national media, 22 in lifestyle blogs, and 15 in resource pages.
Marketing Lead, boutique real estate agencyTeam effort distribution
Net result: the team went from 15h/week on outreach to 4h/week, with a 3.8x increase in closed links. Ahrefs Domain Rating rose from DR 18 to DR 34 in 6 months.
Monthly link-building checklist
Monthly routine (2-3 hours)
- Review backlink discovery: which new links the competition picked up this week
- Run backlink gap and add 20-40 candidates to the queue
- Approve 30-50 AI-drafted pitches (edit 15-30% per client)
- Review lost backlinks and launch recovery on the top 10
- Check unlinked mentions and trigger recovery outreach
- Audit toxic profile and evaluate disavow (typically no)
- Report: links won vs lost, anchor distribution, DA change
- Update editor buyer persona with learned data
- Close Jira/Linear tickets for links pending internal publication
- Retrospective: which pitch converted best this month and why

FAQs
Is automated outreach legal under CAN-SPAM and GDPR?
Yes, if you respect: (a) clear sender identification, (b) unambiguous opt-out in the email footer, (c) legitimate B2B basis (art. 6.1.f GDPR). Semalt includes lawyer-reviewed templates and automatic opt-out.
How does it avoid Gmail spam?
Domain warmup, DKIM/SPF/DMARC configured from the dashboard, conservative rate limit (max 50 emails/day in week 1), rotation across the dedicated SMTP IP pool, and templates avoiding the 128 words Gmail marks as spam.
Can I use my own transactional email (SendGrid, Mailgun)?
Yes. Semalt connects via standard SMTP. We recommend a dedicated server for outreach only (do not share with site transactional).
Does it work for international link building?
Yes. Native multilingual AI (27 languages). The database includes editors tagged by country and editorial language. Critical for agencies serving clients with regional expansion.
How long until results?
First closed links appear in weeks 3-5. Ranking impact typically in month 3-4 (Google needs to crystallise). On new domains (under 12 months) may take 6+ months.
Link building is still the hardest differentiator to execute well. Automating it lets you scale without losing personalisation — always with a human in the approval loop.
